Per Logan County Schools: Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff, We are aware of a social media post this evening regarding many select schools being targeted for violence on Friday. We have continued working with local law enforcement representatives to investigate this swatting activity. Representatives from local law enforcement have shared that this has been taking place this week in various areas of West Virginia and has unfortunately reached Logan County. We will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure the safety of all students and staff members in our school system. Presently, law enforcement is preparing a plan to provide additional security at our schools on Friday. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this situation.

Important Reminder from WVDE!! The following are the only absence reasons defined as excused under current state law: • Medical or dental appointment with a written excuse from a physician or dentist • Personal illness or injury of the student or a student’s family member (limited to 10 per year) • Death in the family • Judicial obligation or court appearance • Military requirement for students enlisted or enlisting in the military. All other absences from instruction are unexcused. Such as, educational leave is not an excused absence under state law or WVBE policy. Parent Notes: Students can submit 10 notes per year for personal illness or injury of a student or family member. Absences for vacations and other voluntary family activities are also not illness-related absences and, therefore, wouldn’t fall under the parent excused absence. Those sorts of absences would be unexcused under the revised state law defining excused absences.
